Title: Duke of Mount Deer
Description: aka The Deer and the Cauldron

lonelyassassin - July 16, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
This story is about a witty, sly, illiterate and lazy protagonist born in a Yangzhou brothel named Wei Xiaobao. By chance, he was taken to the palace where he became a fake eunuch and a favourite of the young Kangxi Emperor. To make the matter even more complicated, he later became one of the leaders of the Heaven and Earth Society, an organization resisting the Manchurian Qing dynasty that had conquered over the majority Han people. This wuxia novel is unique in that the main character has very poor gongfu and was by no mean a person of integrity. He was greedy, lazy, a womanizer, and practically without any redeeming quality except for loyalty to his friends.

I watched the 1998 and 2000 version, both were great. I sorta forgot most of 1998, but recently rewatched 2000 version and it was good. Dicky is awesome. Same goes for Ruby <3

I read reviews and forums that in DOMD 2000, the director change stuff drastically, like how Wei Xiaobao become the strongest fighter at the end and no one could beat him, how Kangxi was manipulative, etc...

Nevertheless, even though it's not faithful to the novel, it was still good.

It's kind of funny how the endings change as different versions of the same story gets produced. But I guess they needed changes to keep it interesting since they probably think that people would be bored by all the same stuff.

the jin yong novel of this story is classic. it has been said to be jin yong's greatest work ever, beating out the condor trilogy and state of divinity.

though i prefer the condor trilogy and SOD more, i can see why it's popular. wei xiao bao is the funniest character and some say that the story is actually a satirical novel on chinese politics
