The Legend of Condor Heroes (Traditional Chinese: ÉäùmÓ¢ÐÛ‚÷; Simplified Chinese: ÉäµñÓ¢ÐÛ´«; pinyin: sh¨¨ di¨¡o y¨©ng xi¨®ng zhu¨¤n) is a wuxia novel by Jinyong, first published in 1957 in Hong Kong Commercial Daily. This is the first novel of the Condor Trilogy. The title in Chinese could be roughly translated to The Legend of the Eagle Shooting Heroes. Jinyong revised all of his novels including this one in 1970s, and again in 2000s.
The story was set in the Southern Song Dynasty and at the beginning of the Nuzhen (Jurchen) Invasion of China. The first part of the novel revolved around the friendship of two young men, Yang Tiexin (—îèFÐÄ) and Guo Xiaotian (¹ù‡[Ìì) who became heroes in their own rights as they fought against the invading Jin soldiers. The bond between the two was so deep that they swore to each other when their children were born, they would become either sworn brothers or sworn sisters (if both are the same gender) or be married if they were of different genders.
The second part of the story focused more on the trials and tribulations that both of their sons underwent. Guo Jing (¹ù¾¸), Guo Xiao Tian's son grew up in Mongolia, under the protection of Genghis Khan. Yang Kang (—), on the other hand, grew up as a prince in the Jin Empire.
Main characters:
Guo Jing (¹ù¾¸) - the hero in the story. He is the son of Guo Xiaotian and Li Ping. Although he is slow witted, he is guileless and true.
Huang Rong (»ÆÈØ) - the love interest of Guo Jing in the story. Clever and quick witted, Huang Rong falls for Guo Jing's honesty and righteousness.
Yang Kang - the sworn brother of Guo Jing and a prince of Jin. He is the son of Yang Tiexin and Bao Xiruo.
TV Series adaptations:
1976 - Wong Man Biu and Michelle Mei Suet as Guo Jing and Huang Rong
1983 - Felix Wong and Barbara Yung portrayed Guo Jing and Huang Rong
1988 - Howie Wong and Idy Chan took a turn at Guo Jing and Huang Rong
1994 - Julian Cheung and Athena Chu starred as Guo Jing and Huang Rong
2003 - Li Yapeng and Zhou Xun star as Guo Jing and Huang Rong
2006 (UNRELEASE) - Hu Ge and Ariel Lin will star as Guo Jing and Huang Rong

My first and only adaptation that I watched was LOCH 03. I like the series. Li Yapeng and Zhou Xun really give me the "feeling" of Guo Jing and Huang Rong in their young age. Zhou Jie's Yang Kang was ok, and I find him sometimes funny because of his voice and reaction when he talks. Mu Nian Ci played by Shui Ling was awesome, looks and acting. Other supporting characters that left a deep impression were Mei Chaofeng, Zhou Botong, Huang Yaoshi, and Qiu ChuJi. I also really like the themesong and the sad bgm played throughout the series.

1998 - Christopher Lee and Fann Wong starred as Guo Jing and Huang Rong????
Dave how can u mistaken that!!!! That version is ROCH 1998, not LOCH 1998!!!!!
1998 - Christopher Lee and Fann Wong starred as Yang Guo & Xiao Long Nu

Lol, I actually didn't even notice that, prob becuase that's the only version I haven't seen of ROCH. I think......
lonelyassassin - June 22, 2006 04:10 PM (GMT)
Lol sorry I havent watch any of those versions. I got the info from wikipedia. Let me edit the topic. >_>
@yanyan
I read at spcnet forum. Many people said that LOCH 03 was close to the novel the most. Same for 1994. They also said, Jin Yong himself said that Zhou Xun portrayed the exact Huang Rong that he had in his novel. I might watch 1994 version, but I'm not going way back to the old 1983 (which people said was good) :dead: .

Everybody that I know, including parents say that the 1976 version was the best. I think the only reason that 2003 wasn't as good is not because it didn't follow the story the best, but its just that they didn't do that well in the acting. The acting for the roles in my opinion is not as good. I think the Huang Rong is good, but didn't like the characters acting.

Recently watched the 1994 version. Comparing the 1994 with the 2003 version. I like the 2003 more, partly due to first impression. China 2003 version got better sceneries and CG + fighting is better (no doubt since it's 9 years later).
I would like to comments on several characters in the 1994 version. Athena Chu's Huang Rong was just pure awesome; she got the looks and skills. Julian Cheung's Guo Jing is so-so. Lau Dan's Hong 7 Qong was perfect. He has truely put his image of the Northern Beggar in my head. Wayne Lai's Zhou Bo Tong was a disappointment. He doesn't have the old look of ZBT at that time, and he was NOT funny at all. At least he improved tremendously in the 1995 ROCH.

the 07 LOCH will be the first condor series i will eva watch... and i will b happi coz it is hu ge and ariel... =D
i am sure the martial arts will be good and the Cgs... =D not too fake as well... i found the ROCH a bit TOO overboard...(i watched a bit) and it was like... too OTT... so i hope LOCH wun be like dat!
i am sure this series will make me LOVE the Condor Series.. patiently waiting... and yes mon u willw atch it.. but who will b the one lugging the episodes to you next year in UNI? when me and you mite not end up in the same one (around 90% chance going 2 USYD and u going 2 UNSW...unless the 10% miracle happens and I get into Med at UNSW....)

well it might be good that u never watched the 83 version or else then it's impossible to not compare. Unless of course u watch the 2003 and compare it to the 07, i'm sure that 07 will be better. The actor that played yang kang totally wasn't fit for the role. I mean he was great in HZGG, but not very good here.
But of course we all know that whatever series hu ge is in, it will always be good. And having ariel with him makes it even better. I have faith in this producer consering he director CP and TWFX (I think).
lonelyassassin - July 28, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
LOL I will NEVER watch ANY 80s series. The graphic and everything else is just horrible. I don't think I can take it.
Yes, I am sure the 2007 version will be very good. And you are correct, the director is the same one that directed CP and TWFX. I just hope he won't go too far into the CG and hopefully no cut scenes like ROCH 06...it just makes the series not enjoyable.
yanyan - July 28, 2006 02:30 PM (GMT)
yea it graphics of course aren't as good, but the acting in my opinion is so much better. And because there aren't as many special effects, it makes it seem more real.
They better not cut out any good scenes. I would be so pissed. Since they are doing the flashback, I wonder how it's gonna happen.
tuyet - July 28, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
I think is ok is flash back from when he young!!!
This one will be better quality than the other !!! hope is gonna soon as posible!!!

I wish Nicholas Tse was still in this instead of backing out because of his schedule. He would have made an awesome Yang Kang; I can just picture him in this role.
Ariesmoon - September 24, 2006 03:15 PM (GMT)
i watched the 1983 version of Barbara Yung and Felix Wong, and i loved it...as everyone said the acting was really good and Barbara Yung protrayed Huang Rong really well... and i agree with yanyan, it seemed really realistic and i sort of liked the fact that there weren't much special effects.
I can't wait for the 07 version though, i hope that it'll be good and i'll be excited to see Hu Ge as Guo Jing, and i whished Nicholas Tse was acting as Yang Kang too, he would have been good for the role^^ hmm and this will be an interesting role for Ariel...
reganig - October 2, 2006 09:49 PM (GMT)
i am looking forward to this series because of hu ge, of course and the director li guo li.
and although i'm a big fan of ariel, i dno't think she should be acting in ancient costumes... she looks better in modern
