Title: starts up, then shuts down
Description: help please!

I have a computer that was working fine until I clean out all the dust from inside. After I cleaned out all the dust and plugged everything back in, I turned on the power button and it started but after 4 seconds it shut down. The moniter remained black the entire time. It did not show the startup screen.

After it shuts down, I hit the power button again and it did not turn back on, I unplugged the power stripe and plugged it back in and it was able to start again. The same thing happens when I start it though. I can hear the beeps, fans, hard drive activity when the computer starts.

One of two things happen when I turn it on, one was that it turns on for 4 seconds and then shuts off the other is that it remains on completely, but doesn't do anything. One of these things will happen when I start the PC. The screen is black, no startup screen whatsoever (yes, I am positive I have my moniter plugged in correctly).

When I cleaned the dust, I used low air pressure to clean it. It was working fine before so I assume that it isn't a overheating problem, since I didn't get to the startup then it could be the video card.

Do you know what could have possiblely caused the problems or how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Try borrowing a monitor from somewhere (friends, relatives) and see if anything come up on-screen. If something comes up onscreen, then your old monitor must have problems and you should replace it. If nothing come up and the same thing happen like before, then I think when you clean the CPU, you must of damaged the video card that relates to the monitor.

nope, none of those are the problem. i brought it to school, hooked it up to a new monitor, didn't work. replaced video card, doesn't work either.

i messed my first comp playing around with virii and now this one messed up too. last comp...i will refrain from doing any of that for a while.

hmm try asking Believer503. He knows more than me and hopefully will help you fix the problem.

nah, don't worry about it, i will work something out. just have to keep changing parts until the i get the right one. i might have fried the power supply.

hey guys. first time coming to your tech section, lonely =). nice downloads!

about your computer, what processor do you have and how beeps of what duration and pitch do you experience before it shuts off? the beeps are the BIOS telling you "OH NOEZ! I'VE DETECTED A HARDWARE FAILURE I CAN'T RESOLVE!" Here's a list of BIOS beep codes for an AMD processor on a phoenix bios:

i doubt it's a bad power supply. if your processor is not AMD or your BIOS isn't phoenix, run a google search on "<your processor> bios beep codes" and match it up. the ones with the dashes means intervals.

i.e. 1-2-3 means a single beep, pause, 2 beeps, pause, 3 beeps

hope this helps!

p.s. i messed up my computer once because i was manually removing some malware and accidentally deleted entire chunks of directories in my HKEY_CLASS_ROOT directory in regedit...yea...not smart...it was like 4 or 5am gimme a break =P.

Welcome to the computer world; I couldn't figure those out.

I stick to website coding. ^_^

there is no need to go any further. i have figured out the problem. it was a power shortage, so i replaced it and still didn't work, cause the master and slave wasn't set right either. thanks for everything.

thanks for that list Believer, i memorized some of the common ones from experience but i am sure that list would prove much more use.

Believer503 - May 11, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
hehe all that from a simple dust off?

of_the_fire_roots - May 11, 2006 02:15 AM (GMT)
no, i have now come to the conclusion that they were already about to die, i just happen to clean it and that probably gave it an excuse to die. like sometimes i hear people say it was working fine but when i gave the moniter a tap, the screen messed up and everything went black. there was probably already a problem and it happens to mess up when you do something to it.

hm your case doesn't sound too common. with the monitor stuff, it's usually just a loose resistor or something. but, if you got it fixed, woot to solutions hehe.

lonely, wanna close this thread?

this case isn't very uncommon, but it depends, sometimes it's the video card or in one other case i had someone driving 5 drives into a 250 watt power supply. :irratated:

this case has been solved and will now be locked. if you experience a similiar problem feel free to open up a new thread.
